Restore failed to register

I tried to load and run Desktop Restore to my WIN98 based computer. I saved the executable to the desktop rather than run it directly so I could shut off all other operating programs during installation. When I runs it I get the following....... "Module C:\WINDOWS\ShellExt\dkticnsr.dll failed to register. HRESULT - 2147024776........" If I then select CONTINUE the program says that it installed properly but the two expected desktop icons never appear. Also, all of my desktop icons are now underlined and even files and folders viewed in Internet Explorer are underlined. If I then run it again and select REMOVE, it responds that it was successfully removed, but all icons are still underlined. Any suggestions how I can correct problem?

First, make sure you download DSREX.EXE and not DSREXU.EXE. Win9x does not support UNICODE. If you have downloaded the correct program and still have the trouble, you may need an updated version of the Windows Installer for Win98: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=cebbacd8-c094-4 255-b702-de3bb768148f&DisplayLang=en if you are still having trouble after all that, you can manually register the DLL using regsvr32.exe (in the Windows\System folder -- I think). No desktop Icon items are installed: two menu items are installed on the desktop right-click menu. This program has no effect on how ICONs are displayed or underlining of files in Windows Explorer. There may be a Windows setting that affects that though -- check under Explorer | Tools | Folder Options... (I don't remember exactly how it was presented in Win98).
