Bug (?) - refreshing

Hi, and thanks for that great program. Unfortunately i happen to have some minor issue with it. When i use "restore desktop" command , all icons come back to their saved places nicely, but when i refresh the desktop they all line up by name... I dunno, maybe that's not a problem with your prog but rather something wrong with my config... I'm using xp pro sp2 (polish language verson) Once again thanks for that prog. I've been using similar option in ATI Tray Tools, but then i changed my vcard to nvidia (so ATITT no workey anymore), and now i can use that! Plus it's free! Cheers!

| It's a bug, but it's a Windows bug and that is precisely the reason that Desktop Restore was written. Without it, you'd be stuck with whatever Windows feels like doing with your icons -- usually, after you've carefully laid them out.

I too have encountered this ‘bug’ but it occurs only under certain conditions. Up until recently I had been using a program called Icon Restore but because it didn’t always restore every icon in the saved order (it often missed a few which then had to be manually moved) I decided to try Desktop Restore. On trying Desktop Restore I was delighted to find that it always restored the saved icon order accurately when using the configuration recommended in the help file of ‘Align to Grid’ on and ‘Auto Arrange’ off (I found it also worked okay with Auto Arrange on). I then however discovered that any change to the desktop icon configuration settings e.g. turning on ‘Auto Arrange’, when it was off when the icon order was saved, caused the program to cease to work and any subsequent refreshing of the desktop screen resulted in all icons being rearranged in a continually changing order on every refresh of the screen. Going back to the original desktop icon configuration setting used when you saved the icon order did not stop this happening and it seemed that the only way to fix the problem was to uninstall the program and manually move the icons back to the preferred order. The other program I was using also did exactly the same thing and stopped working properly after any change to the desktop icon configuration setting and like Desktop Restore it did not work properly even after you reversed the changes. It appears that any changes made to desktop icon configuration settings override the shell extension that both programs use. Desktop Restore in my opinion is the better of the two programs I've tried because it at least always restores the icon order accurately as long as the desktop icon configuration settings are not touched after it is installed and the icon order saved. It’s a good program and works well and can save a lot of annoyance and time but both programs cease to work properly if any change is made to the desktop icon configuration settings after the icon order is saved. This results in the problem adi-c refers to with the desktop icon order rearranging after a screen refresh. After some experimenting I discovered a simple way around the problem if for any reason you encounter the problem of the icons rearranging each time a screen refresh occurs. When this happens do the following: 1. Change the desktop icon settings to ‘Auto Arrange’ off and ‘Align to Grid’ off. 2. Right click and restore the desktop icons using Desktop Restore. 3. Move one of the icons; say the last one, to a new position anywhere on the desktop. 4. Turn ‘Align to Grid’ back on (but do not turn ‘Auto Arrange’ on) and refresh the screen and then shift the icon you moved back to its original position. You should then find that the icon order will not rearrange on screen refreshes any more. This by the way shows that the recommended setting in the help file with ‘Auto Arrange’ off and ‘Align to Grid’ on is the ideal setting for the program because the problem still exists if ‘Auto Arrange’ is turned on after the steps above are taken. This is no big deal as there is no real need to have ‘Auto Arrange’ on anyhow. Thanks for this useful program!

'Auto-arrange' always trumps any other setting, because choosing it (turning it ON) causes the icons to be re-ordered by Windows. This option actually specifies an action, not just a setting. This re-ordering can further be specified by Name, Type, Size or Date; but it will always lay out the icons in rows next to each other. This will likely blow away any customization you have done. However, if you then turn 'Auto-arrange' off, you can restore a previously saved layout. 'Align-to-grid' specifies that icons should remain an equal space from each other horizontally and vertically. It's like a 'snap-to-grid' option. It does not cause the icons to be rearranged, however.
