You can drag gadgets from the sidebar onto the desktop then close the sidebar and use win+space to bring up any gadgets hidden under active windows. I find this more useful than losing desktop space to the sidebar for the handful of gadgets I find useful. However, whenever I log in remotely the resolution changes and the gadget locations get messed up.   Thanks!
