Opening files in windows with a patch change

Hey guys, I'm new to this board and to Midi-Ox, but so far as I'm learning it, it's a killer program! Here's my dilemma. I'm in a band (that is about to embark on our first US tour), and I run a keyboard that controls my laptop (PC) on stage. I run Midi Ox, and then Midi Yoke it into Cubase SE, where I run Native Instrument's Kontakt 1.5 as a VST. Now, it wasn't until AFTER I purchased Kontakt 1.5 (a great sampler) that I realized that their programmers provided absolutely NO WAY to open multi files with simple Midi patch changes. So, I'm kinda stuck. I feel like a total nerd on stage having to go to my computer and click 'file open' in between songs! I'd LOVE to be able to just send a Midi patch change message which would trigger a script in Midi-Ox to open a file on my hard-drive. Can someone walk me through this? I'd be forever indebted to you!!!

It seems to me that the file needs to be opened into Kontakt, right? I don't see anyway around the requirement that it be Kontakt that opens the file. You might have multiple instances of Kontakt running. Even if another program could load a file into it externally, how would it know which instance to load it into?

I only run one instance of Kontakt, but, I'd say the biggest problem is that Kontakt runs inside of Cubase, and both are dependent on opening the file. I'm still confident that there is a way to do this.

I just put out threads on a Kontakt forum and a Cubase forum, so maybe someone will be able to help me out there. In the meantime, I'm wondering if there is a way to just open a generic file in Windows by sending a command that triggers a script in Midi Ox. What would be a piece of code that would load a .JPEG file if i sent a patch change command to Midi Ox?

Load a JPEG...into what? Built into MIDI-OX is the ability to load a .oxm or .txm data map upon receiving a patch change, but these are both MIDI-OX file types, and MIDI-OX loads them into itself. It doesn't know what to do with a JPEG, because that's irrelevant for its operation.

Hey Jamie, Sorry I don't really know what I'm talking about, and I'm confusing you. Fret not, I've found a solution to my problem. I am buying Forte and replacing Cubase. Forte is meant for live application, Cubase is really designed more for studios. Forte has much better MIDI routing and you can also save snapshots of your virtual instruments and load them up via MIDI. This is exactly what I needed. Thanks for your help anyway, --J

Just read your mail; you seem to have found a good solution, but in case your needs change in the future: It is possible to get MIDIOX to open files, run programs and/or put the Window's focus on any open programs. I posted the necessary code in the thread of "generating keypress" in this part of the forum. I come back to this need again and again, even when working with quite different programs.
