Setting a solo instrument

I am trying to extract and play a solo instrument from a Midi orchestral file. The sequencer output is split in Port Routings with the solo channel going to Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth and all other channels being sent unchanged to a Hauptwerk organ which responds correctly. I am trying to set the solo instrument to Clarinet(71) in the Instrument Panel but the output sound is probably Pizz. Str(46). Similarly all attempts to save my settings are lost on reloading i.e. the instrument shows 01 Grand Piano and my selected channel 4 reverts to channel 1. Does my intended purpose fall within the capabilities of the Instrument Panel and if so, how should its settings be applied and stored for reloading?

My previous query did not score a comment so I will reframe my question. I am able to select a (solo) instrument for a given channel in Instrument Panel but have been unable to find where this information is placed. Where is the instrument information stored, can it be edited outside Midiox and how can it be reloaded so it does not become necessary to fiddle with the settings on each new startup?

Sorry digging out an old thread. But I have exactly the same request. Did somebody find the possibility to set up an initial instrument without changing the normal instrumental list? Thanks for your help.

The instrument panel is a method of sending MIDI messages and nothing more.

Okay - good to know. Thanks. But is there an other way the set the initital instrument to something else then Piano? I already changed the GM.INS file but that has changed only the instrument description.

MIDI OX and MIDI Yoke are not part of your GM device. If you want to configure your GM device, you need to consult its documentation. (i.e. you're stuffed for the Microsoft synth..!) If you want to edit the MIDI file, get a MIDI file editor.

You can always set up a MAP file for an individual routing. In the properties of that specific routing select a MAP file. This applies the MAP only to that routing. The MAP would send the Program (Patch #) change of the instrument you want from any input event ( for instance an SPP, RPN, CTRL, or any event you want ) by matching the output event as a Program Chamge ( in your case to channel # 1 ) with min. and max. patch# value of the instrument you want

But if there is no patch change - likely to be the case for default piano sound - then there's nothing to map and you need to insert something before the first event. That's quite tricky to set up (i.e. injecting something once only per piece of music).

That's true - you would have to have some event to MAP the patch# change on.

Okay, I got the solution. Many thanks to everybody. Finally it was the dialogue who brought me to the idea with the not used Pedal-Instruments (I will select the “Bright Acoustic Piano” for the Pedals and I will get the “Harmonica” on the Manual). Background: I built the Quantophon based an the English Concertina extended with Pedals. The MIDI-electronic I bought in Bulgaria ( http://midiboutique.com/midiboutique/ ). Unfortunately the electronic for the Manual did not include an instrument selection. Therefore I bout a MIDI-kit in Ireland ( http://tomscarff.tripod.com/ ). Everything was working well so far. For some reason the kit, together with the MIDI-USB-interface, broke down last week – I've got no Idea what happened. The MIDI-USB-Interface was easy to replace. To fix the kit I am not able to (!). Therefore I was looking for a SW solution. Furthermore I decided to set the Manual-Instrument fix to “Harmonica”. That’s actually sufficient for the Manual of an electronic English Concertina. Now I can even re-map the Pedal instruments 1 to 9 – I think about it. PS. First I tried the Idea with a MIDI Edit-Tool and a playing note. But again, I could not load the music automatically and then I had also conflicting devices (?). I start MIDIOX automatically with a free autostart admin-tool (http://www.lothargeisinger.de/products/ ) - to tool has a little bug but apart from that it works fine. Additionally I don’t know how the stop a program without opening the LapTop and without destroying it .
