Yamaha DD-50 with VST

I am running Cubase VST5-32. When I trigger the virtual instruments from my Yamaha CS1-X keyboard everything works fine. I want to trigger virtual instruments, specifically superdrumFX from a Yamaha DD-55. Cubase receives the MIDI messages and records to MIDI tracks, but most of the time does not trigger the superdrumFX instrument, although it does some of the time. I have tried delaying the note off messages in MIDI-ox, I have tried delaying both note on and note off messages. This seems to make some difference, but still unusably inconsistent. other virtual instruments seem to work ok. MIDI messages from the DD-55 and CS1-X appear the same in the MIDI analyser. I am completely stumped. Any ideas?

Just remembered, the transformer I am using for the DD-55 is 11.5 volts rather than 12 volts. Anyone know whether this could cause problems?
