Laptop crash with Roland AX-1, MidiSport 2X2

Hi Jamie, this one has me stumped, but first let me say that MIDI-OX is wonderful. I have used it both live and in the studio with several different setups, hardware and software, and I've found it to be just as useful as its icon (the Swiss Army Knife) if not moreso.

The fatal combination appears to be my Roland AX-1 strap-on controller running through a Midiman MidiSport 2X2 USB MIDI interface. I'm running MIDI-OX v6.13 on a Compaq Presario 1690 Laptop with WindowsME. (I know, there's a new version of MIDI-OX now, but my laptop is currently in between 'net connections...) I'll present three different scenarios each of which produce drastically different results:

1) AX-1 turned on and plugged in to 2X2, bring up MIDI-OX. Here, I get an error dialog (looks old, like a 16-bit one) saying "Error occurred in application" with an "Ignore" or "Close" option. "Close" makes MIDI-OX hang in a non-terminable state (can't be killed even through Ctrl-Alt-Del). "Ignore" moves on to another error dialog (this one looks Win32-ish) that says the following: "Error occurred in MMCBK16.DLL". Trying to close the app then brings on the same non-terminable state, which can only be solved with a System Restart. At this point, sometimes the Restart process itself becomes unstable, requiring a complete Cold Boot (and lots of waiting for WinME to clean up after itself  Angry ).

2) AX-1 plugged in but turned off. Bring up MIDI-OX, then turn on AX-1. The computer crashes violently! Shocked Sometimes I get a Blue Screen of Death, sometimes a black one, but it's never a pretty sight.

3) AX-1 on and not plugged in, MIDI-OX running. Plug in the AX-1, everything is fine, and works great!  Cheesy While I could use this option as a workaround, it is quite inconvenient, and very dangerous in a live situation, i.e. were the power to the AX-1 to be somehow interrupted during a session.

FWIW, all three of the above cases work just fine when I drive a SoftSynth (e.g. Seer Reality) directly with the AX-1 through the 2X2 on the laptop. No problems or crashes, no matter what I throw at it.

I read about setting up the size of MIDI buffers in the Help files, but I haven't tried changing them yet, mostly because I'm not even trying to do a SysEx dump here. Would that even make a difference, I wonder?  Undecided

Thanks in advance for your help!

MIDI-OX 6.4.2 will still fit onto a floppy disk.  I highly recommend you upgrade to the most recent version.  Because MIDI-OX is free, we have a policy of not supporting previous versions.  Truthfully, I don't have a clue as to why you are crashing, but we've changed a lot since your version (6.1.3):

Jamie,

Your support policy is a good one, and sticking by it worked out great. I did just as you said, using a floppy to transfer the installer to my laptop. MIDI-OX came up and ran without a hitch even with the worst of the above combinations.

Looks like some change made along the way must have fixed what was happening here. From now on, I'll be sure to keep updated before I make any more long posts!! (BTW, my fault for not noticing that MIDI-OX was so nice and compact.)

I was so impressed by how "live" your support is that I went ahead and clicked on the Amazon link and volunteered some support of my own (you deserve it!)  Smiley  and I would like to encourage anyone else reading this to do the same!

Thanks again for your help and for such a great product (getting greater all the time)!
