yes, this is a dumb question and yes, i'm a complete midiot (i thought it was funny), but here goes: i need to get midi files from my pc to my nord. i accidentally got this to work a few months ago but being the genius that i am, i neither wrote the procedure down nor can recall how i did what i did. i've got midi-ox, i've got the usb/midi interface, i've got the files downloaded from clavia's website, i can get them to play in the midibar, but nothing happens. please advise. thanks! -jim

If I understand correctly, you have System Exclusive information encoded into Standard MIDI Files (.MID), that you want to playback in order to transfer SysEx to the Nord? You could do this directly to the Nord from MidiBar if you choose the external MIDI Interface attached to the Nord from within MidiBar. You could also route the data through MIDI-OX if you want to monitor the transfer, if you have the MIDI Yoke diver installed. Choose MIDI Yoke 1 as the device in MidiBar. Choose MidiYoke 1 as the input device in MIDI-OX. Choose the External MIDI device attached to the Nord input as Output in MIDI-OX. Now load the file into MidiBar and press Play. Also make sure you have "Pass SysEx" checked in Options | Pass SysEx.

ummm...no dice. i installed the yoke, set everything up just like the post says, selected the midi files in midibar, hit play. nothing. i got this to work once without the yoke...there's something i'm missing here...any ideas? the midi files i'm trying to load may or may not be system exclusive. they're just patches for the nord. what should the little bird cage (midi ports) read? open or closed? i've altered just about everything i can think of... -jim

It sounds like the MidiBar device needs configuration. Click the First button in MidiBar. It represents a MIDI Jack, and determines where the MIDI will go. The first item is "Default (Mapper)" -- don't select that -- it will use whatever device "Control Panel | Windows Sounds and Audio" is set to. Instead, select the desired device, "MIDI Yoke: 1" in this case. The "birdcage" should be closed -- that means devices are connected.

still nothing...i tried what you said and every variation of that. does the channel in midi ox matter? the nord is set to 16. the light on the midisport-out A is lighting up. does this indicate that information is making it to the midisport and somewhere between the midi cable and the nord the information is getting bunged up? thanks for your patience and advice. -jim

Just to ensure that everything is set up correctly, please do an experiment: Open MidiBar. Choose "MIDI Yoke 1" as the Output device. Load a standard MIDI file containing music (.MID) for verification. You can use "C:\WINDOWS\Media\Canyon.mid", if nothing else is available. Open MIDI-OX. Choose "MIDI Yoke 1" as the Input device. Choose your USB MIDI device as the Output device. Start playback in MidiBar. Verify that the MIDI-OX monitor is displaying the notes as playback continues. If everything is working so far, you can try substituting your Nord MIDI file and loading that in MidiBar.

yep yep yep...monitor shows that the data is being played. this indicates that the problem exists outside of midi-ox. so it could be one (or more) of three things: the keyboard itself, the midi cable, or the midisport usb port (or does the monitor activity account for information making it to the midisport?). thanks again for your help. -jim

i went to view | control panel and just hit buttons and the nord reacted, so...this means that information can be sent from my pc to the synth. i would guess, perhaps incorrectly, that i have some setting within midi ox out of whack. my nord is on channel 16, if that matters. i'm pretty sure that nothing has to set on the nord to accept the data...just select the patch you'd like to begin with and let her rip. if i go around mashing buttons within midi ox, i'm liable to send myself even further from where i need to be, so i'll refrain. is there a default setting for midi ox that might restore something i may have messed up?

I mentioned it earlier in the thread, but it is imperative that Options | Pass SysEx is checked. You indicate that MidiBar is playing the data through MIDI-OX, and that MIDI-OX Control Panel affects the Nord. What is it that is not happening? What do you expect to happen?

options | pass sysex IS checked. the nord receives messages sent from "control panel" in midi ox. the only thing i can't seem to make happen is for the actual .mid files (which are sytem exclusive) to be loaded into the nord.

When you "play" the .MID files, do you see the SysEx data blocks pass by in the monitor? If so, how do you know they aren't being loaded into the Nord? Three more things to check: 1) Open Options | MIDI Devices... Expand the output driver in Port Mapping. Make sure that the input driver (MIDI Yoke 1?) is attached (listed under). Expand the Input driver, and make sure that "System | System Exclusive" is being passed. 2) Open Options | MIDI Filter... Ensure that "[x] Display SysEx messages in Monitors" is checked. Ensure that no other filtering is being performed (for now). 3) Open Options | Configure Buffers... and set Input and Output Size: 256 Bytes and Number: 16

just for your information, when you load sounds onto the nord, the patch numbers scroll as the patches are stored. for example, let's start on patch 1. 1 (bank 1, slot 1) on the pcmcia card. 297 sounds will be loaded onto this card, so the patch numbers will scroll from 1. 1 and stop on 3.99 (bank 3, slot 99), indicating that all the patches were assigned on the card. i'll try those other hints. thanks again and again, jamie. -jim
