getting started

Howdy everyone. I'm new to this and trying to record MIDI tracks on to ProTools Free from my keyboard. I've got a PC with a gameport that I'm using to plug in the keyboard. My sound card is integrated onto the motherboard, it's an ME OS. I have the MPU-401 listed as a device on my computer but I'm not sure if my computer will send MIDI messages to Protools. It will record an audio track from the keyboard but not MIDI messages. Could it be my input/output configuration? Do I need the MIDI-OX? Any advice?

MIDI-OX can tell you whether your keyboard is transmitting MIDI through the MPU401 device.

Thank you for your response. I was just reading the help files for MIDI-OX, and I can't seem to determine whether or not my keyboard is successfully transmitting MIDI messages to the MPU-401. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

For an initial test, Launch MIDI-OX. Open Options | MIDI Devices... Choose your MPU401 interface as input. Choose some Synth as output (I don't know what you have). Press OK. Play some notes on your MIDI keyboard. Messages should show up in the monitor Window. If you've selected an outout device, you will hear the MIDI notes play back. If you haven't opened an Output device you'll need to look in the input Monitor for the messages.

OK. When I use the computer keyboard to play notes, my piano keyboard receives the messages and plays the notes, but when I play the piano keys, the MIDI messages are not sent. The MIDI Outputs box in the MIDI Devices window doesn't list my piano keyboard. So messages are going into the piano keyboard but they are not coming out. Can I have it both ways?

It should work both ways. To receive input from your external MIDI keyboard, you have to select the MPU401 as your INPUT device in Options MIDI Devices... I will guess that you have already selected the MPU401 as your Output device as MIDI-OX is able to send Output to your MIDI keyboard.
