MIDI and USB Audio Device

I am developing a piece of prototype MIDI USB hardware. When I connect it to any of several desktops, including Dell Dimension, I see the device show up as a MIDI Input / MIDI Output device in software (including MIDIOX and Anvil Studio). When I connect it to a Dell Inspiron i8200 laptop, the USB installation goes well and the device shows up (as USB Audio Device) properly in the Device Manager, but the device does NOT show up as a MIDI Input / MIDI Output device in any software (including MIDIOX and Anvil Studio). The device uses the Windows Class Driver and does NOT need a CD to work properly on the Dimension. All cases tested have been on XP Professional.

I had a similar issue when dealing with a PS2 to USB adapter... turns out there wasn't enough power. It would recognize it, but it wasn't usable.
