Why does MIDI-OX stutter in XP?

I've been using MIDI-OX and MIDI-Yoke with no problem at all for months and months using Windows Millennium Edition. It was so trouble-free I'd almost forgotten it was there. But I've just installed Windows XP on exactly the same hardware and now I'm getting lots of MIDI stuttering and faltering. This happens even if I just have a straight-through patch from the MIDI UART to the sound card, no other programs running. What's happened, can anyone suggest a fix?

It's a Pentium III 667MHz  with 256MB RAM so there shouldn't be any bottlenecks as far as I know. The sound card/ MIDI port is a SBLive, pretty standard stuff.

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Howard.

You've put XP's desktop into classic mode, haven't you?  The fancy rubbish MS install by default eats CPU cycles in an inordinate manner.  (I have a 2GHz machine with 1G RAM, so if it makes a difference here, you're certainly going to find it helps!)

Also, you've installed the MIDI Yoke NT drivers, in place of the '98 ones?

Beyond that, I can't think of anything.

Suprisingly, using 32 bit - 16 bit thunking on Windows 9x provides better and tighter timing than NT type OS's, but it should be possible to get acceptable performance using Win 2000, Win XP.
