Can I start/close/restart/load profile whenever?

Can I start/close/restart/load a profile whenever I want to, or does it have to be done in a certain order? For example, I will be using MIDIOX with Sonar 3. Do I have to start MIDIOX first? Or can I have Sonar open, open a project, and then open MIDIOX? Can I close and restart MIDIOX while a Sonar project is open? Can I switch profiles while a Sonar project is open? etc. What are the rules?

There are two types of MIDI port: those that let more than one program open them and those that don't. MIDI Yoke ports allow multiple access. Most hardware ports don't. Okay. Now your question. MIDI OX is just another program that opens MIDI ports. If you use MIDI OX to open single-open ports, nothing you try after MIDI OX has the ports open will be able to open those ports. If you open the ports in something else before you load MIDI OX, MIDI OX won't be able to open them. I use MIDI OX to forward data from hardware In ports to a MIDI Yoke port and from a MIDI Yoke port to (one of several) hardware Out ports. If MIDI OX isn't running, the data doesn't get forwarded, of course. But it makes no difference what order I start things in: only MIDI OX opens single-open ports - everything else uses the MIDI Yoke multi-open ports.
