Sound problem

I'm just learning to play a keyboard and have a Technics KN 2000. The trouble is I can't play midi through my keyboard from my laptop, there is no sound. I've used Midi-Ox and all seems to be ok. Even the laptop keyboard when touched is coming up 'Note On' and 'Note Off'. There is just no sound. I have set output and input to USB cable and have had the KN 2000 set to GM on and off. I reset all midi channels on KN2000 to channel one and have had them from one through sixteen. Can anybody please advise where I'm going wrong?

Hi I was unable to find a user manual for the KN2000. Quite often there is a setting to enable and disable Midi input. This is true on my Roland RD170 If you know where there is a manual I would be happy to look through it to see. Royce

Thanks for your kind offer of help Royce. I feel a complete fool now. I checeked the setup again from scratch and it seems one of the midi cables was attached to midi thru. It all works now I'm connected. Phew! One thing I would like to ask is that the midi file sounds strange when played out of GM but fine with it. Can you possibly say why this is? Sorry for wasting your time. lavoisier

The GM (General Midi) is a Roland standard where certain sounds are placed in certain locations. For example, the first preset is an acoustic piano. So you get your best Steinway preset and pop it into preset 1. Acoustic Bass is 33 and Drums are on Channel 10. So if i make a Midi file of a Jazz trio I could be pretty sure that I wouldn't get a flute playing the bass part and a choir singing the piano part if I used GM and set the presets to 33 and 1 respectively. Outside GM any preset can go any where. This can be useful, for example, for live performance. Song 1 - Organ changes to Piano Song 2 - Piano to vibraphone to organ to harmonica solo etc Make patches 11 Organ 12 Piano 21 Piano 22 Vibraphone 23 Organ again 24 Harmonica This makes it a bit easier under the stress of performance. So there is a good reason to have both. For info on GM.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_MIDI Yamaha's version of GM is XG. Hope this helps Royce

Thanks for taking the time to help me Royce. They must seem like simple questions. I guess I'll pick it up as I go along. I've ordered a book from Amazon on Midi so hopefully I'll get more of an insight then. Paul
