Roland U-20 SysEx question [SOLVED]

Hi people,

I'm new to MIDI-OX but already loving the software a lot - very usefull!

I'm having a problem with my Roland U-20 keyboard.

When I got this thing, only 9 out of all keys were working.
I opened it up and completely cleaned all carbon pads with alcohol and closed it again. All keys work flawless now!

Sadly, when I switch from the default Piano instrument to another one, I get weird signs in the instrument name label and no sounds out of my U-20 anymore. If i swich back to the first instrument (piano) again, it is sometimes a completely different piano (and not touch sensitive anymore) or just stops working.

Looks like I got the memory damaged. A shame, since all keys are working now.

I went on testing a bit and found out that I can reset it to this state (after making it stop by switching instruments) by going to Data -> Utl -> Initialize -> All.
Then I have the piano instrument back (I-11 #001 : Standard).

After this I tried reinitializing the memory by going into the factory settings (see the links below). This solved nothing, and made nothing worse - situation completely the same.
I can copy instruments over eachother (Data -> Write -> Keyb -> I11 -> I12 for example) and this works, so the memory is not unuseable it seems.

Then I started playing with SysEx.
Like the dude in the other thread on this forum (linked below) I found the presets.MID file (linked below) and tried playing that using MIDIBar. Weirdly he gets a message saying something about a full buffer, but I get a popup saying 'There are no MIDI devices installed on the system. etc...'. Even tho I selected my USB midi in/out device (and this works fine in MIDI-OX it seems, as I can see incomming data coming from the U-20 passing by when I play on it, and also use this in other software like software synths).

Then I tried sending the converted file from the other thread to the U-20, even tho it was for the U-220, I figured the main difference would be the buildin keyboard so it was worth a shot.
Long story short, MIDI-OX sends the data, I see the LED on my MIDI cable/controller blink but there is nothing happening on the side of the keyboard. Nothing visible at all.

Now the settings on the keyboard are all as described in the SweetWater article linked below, so SysEx should work.
After this I found the .zip file with the ALL.SYX file. Sending this had the same result. Blinking leds and everything, but nothing visible on the U-20.

I did set the buffer sizes to 390 (Sysex -> Configure in MIDI-OX SysEx view) because I did read something about that in the other post, but nothing happening.

Does anyone have any hints of in wich direction I could/should search? If so, please let me know!

So far I found/tried this:
http://www.midiox.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=query;action=display;nu m=1353520286 (about the U-220, the rackmounted synth version of this keyboard)
http://www.synthzone.com/midi/roland/u20/ (factory presets and a u20.zip file with a SysEx file named 'ALL' in it)
http://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/roland-u-20-initializing-re storing-factory-settings/ (Re-initializing memory)
http://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/roland-u-20-loading-system- exclusive-data/ (Setting up SysEx)

A little update Angry Angry Angry

My sleepy head decided to plug the midi out cable from my controller into the 2nd output instead of the input on the U-20.... Embarassed Embarassed Huh

Cables are in the correct holes now and patched the U-20 back to life using the ALL.SYX file in the u20.zip!

I am one very happy man, and I feel very dumb Tongue

Yay! Setting the MIDI buffer size to 390 did the trick!  Smiley I have banged my head on my Roland U-20 for many hours; it did not want to receive any sysex. Thanks for the tip, man!

Shouldn't Midi-ox come with preset buffers with adequate size? Memory is cheap, these days. This problem need not not happen!
