"bulk dump"

Hi! I did download MIDI-OX wanting to do a "bulk dump" and in the process, I get stuck by getting the message:" no input device is selected or..." For the life of me, I did click on everything that was clickable and never did arrive to a place where I could chose an input device. Is it that the software doesn't see my keyboard? Also,is there a difference between a "bulk dump" and a "manual dump" ? Manual dump is the only thing I have seen at MIDI-OX.

First set up the Midi devices... Options/Devices - select your Midi In and Out Show the Port Routing Window... View/Port Routings Options/Pass Sysex When you close MidiOx this setting will be remembered, but when you start MidiOx again I sometimes find I have to unselect then reselect to get this to work. Don't know why. Output a sysex dump... In the Port Routing window connect MidiOx Event Port to your Midi output. View/Sysex File/Send Sysex File - menu option on the new dialog. Select your file and it should be sent to the Midi Out connected to the MidiOx Event port. Input and save a sysex dump... View/Sysex Sysex/Receive Manual Dump - menu option on the new dialog. MidiOx listens to all the Midi In ports and captures the sysex. Watch the 'Bytes Received' to see that the sysex coming in is about the correct size. Click 'Done' button and you will be asked to save the file. Al the best Royce

Thanks! It was very well explained and I could do a "manual dump" without any problem. Now,I wasn't expecting getting such a file...full of 00 00 00. How in hell one can use that and a "bulk receive" to add new sounds to a keyboard? Thanks! Edit: Also, this morning,I did try to "bulk receive" the very same file I did previously "manual dump" and...here is what I got. http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w252/Gillangl/midi-ox3_zpsef50bcd3.jp g Any idea? There was nothing else running on my laptop at the time.

You might like to try and increase the buffer size. Options / Configure Buffers... I have 64 x 1024 Byte Low level Output buffers (i was messing around with some very big sysex dumps). I have 16 buffers of 256 bytes for the low level Input buffer and that seems to work for me under XP As far as 'adding new sound' the dump allows you to safely edit the synth knowing that you can load back the sounds you have now saved as a bulk dump. You don't mention the synth you are playing with, but there may be an editor for laptop floating around the internet. If not, you should still be able to edit the sound on the synth, save it on the synth and then save your work to the PC. (don't forget to back up these files on hard disk to a CD.) There may be groups of like minded synth owners with free patches, especially if it is an older synth, again, on the internet. Look for sysex files to load from MidiOx or Midi files which you can convert to sysex or send using your DAW. All the best Royce

Thanks! I did use the numbers you did provide and the "bulk receive" went like a charm. I have a Casio WK-1250 . The guy at Casio told me that the only way to add new sounds to my keyboard is if they come from another WK-1250. The WK-1250 has a "synth" feature that allow you to create new sounds starting with existing sounds. It's really crude but...you can created 10 users' sounds I think and then save them in the keyboard's memory. If you then make a "bulk dump" you can send this file to a friend that has another WK-1250 and by doing a "bulk receive" of this file he would then get my 10 new sounds into his keyboard. Isn't there any other way to get new sounds...not coming from a keyboard not exactly the same brand or model that one got? Thanks!

Hi, ideally what you need is an editor for your synth. If there isn't one available and you can't edit properly on the keyboard itself then your choice is limited to creating your own editor or modifying the bulk dump byte by byte (not recommended). I went to Casio support and finally found their list of manuals for download, but there are quite a few missing, yours included. I had downloaded the manual of my brothers Casio synth and I too find it confusing, but there is a fairly detailed Midi specification in a separate document so writing an editor would be straight forward if you were incline to do it. Unfortunately that manual doesn't have the Midi specification. You need a list of where the parameters are in the dump. Casio often had a Midi document separate from the User manual. You could write to them to see if there is anything available. Royce
