Newbie needs advice getting started

I have a 17-year-old Yamaha W7 work station that I am trying to interface with my computer. It uses an obsolete and problematic 3.5" floppy drive for media storage. It also uses an archaic AQ1 Yamaha file extension which can be converted to general midi with an on-board utility. I have several hundred of these files that I want to store and retrieve from my computer. I started with Yamaha's MusicSoft downloader which would be ideal except it is not compatible with my obsolete midi device (many emails exchanged with their feeble tech support). I have successfully installed an EM-U USB adapter with mini in and out cables plus their midi yoke software. Midi-Ox seems to be working as it recognizes the midi input and output. I can send midi messages from the keyboard to midi-ox but they are not playing the correct voices and I have been unable to log and retrieve anything. In short, I am totally lost in the terminology! I have become very good at recording complex midi sequences within the Yamaha operating system but am totally lost in the midi world at large. My questions: 1) Is Midi-Ox the correct tool for recording and retrieving existing gmidi sequences from keyboard to computer? Where can I get help setting this thing up given my limited knowledge? 2)

Welcome, I think MusicSoft should work with your new Midi adapter. What is the problem exactly? A quick Google even showed that there is a set up video on youTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkohVd7q_bU MidiOx is a Swiss army knife type of tool for looking at what is going on with the Midi data, a tool for filtering and changing Midi data, recording sysex and playing Midi files amongst other things. One way of getting your Midi files out is playing the file in the W7 and assuming that it outputs the Midi when playing (you can check to see using MidiOx) , you could record it, but not using MidiOx unfortunately. There are a few free Midi recorders on the web. http://www.anvilstudio.com/ All the best Royce
