usb midi detected by xp but no midi devices

Hello forum members,

I just recently upgraded my PC hardware from ASUS M2N motherboard AMD Athlon 64 2gb Ram with XP SP3
to an ASROCK 970 Pro R2.0 and AMD FX4300 4gb Ram using the same copy of Windows XP SP3 I have.

The problem I now have is that any usb midi interface I have which does not require any special drivers are detected by the new XP setup in device manager as usb audio device, but no midi input/output devices are available.

I have a Roland UM-1 which is seen by MidiOX and other software but not the ones that use the standard windows drivers.

These same usb midi interfaces worked on the older motherboard and same copy of Windows XP.

In DXDIAG on the old machine the Music tab showed the usb midi interface's as usb audio, but on the new machine there is no usb midi device at all.

I am a complete loss as to how to rectify this problem.  Any ideas?

I have screen captures of device manager, sound properties and usbdeview, but don't know how to upload the images.

Regards Andrew

Hi Andrew,
you might like to try...
Disconnect all your Midi USB Audio Devices
Right click on My Computer and select Properties
Click on the hardware tab and click the Device Manager button
Select the View menu option and turn on the 'Show hidden devices'
Under sound and Video you should find a list of current and previous Midi interfaces.
Delete all USB Audio Devices and any others that should no longer be there.

I theory you don't need to, but I would reboot the computer.

Now plug in your other devices one by one checking each time that they can been seen.

Hope it works for you

Hello Breath,

Thanks for the reply, solved it.

I did a backup drive image of my XP installation and did a fresh reload of windows XP without any of the motherboard drivers installed and midiox detected the usb midi interfaces I connected.

As soon as I loaded the first set of drivers from the Motherboard CD which were ATI catalyst all in one drivers, my usb midi devices disappeared, uninstalled the drivers and back they came.

This particular set of drivers were AMD USB Filter Driver and AMD SMBus driver.

I then reinstalled my last drive image back on the new PC and uninstalled the AMD USB Filter driver and now it all works great.

Hi Andrew

Motherboard drivers interfering with Midi drivers. That's a new one for me.

Well done.

Glad you sorted it.

All the best
Royce
