Title: Possible Bug?
Post by hse51 on Jan 26th, 2009, 12:26pm
I run Vista 32 and about every 5 times I reboot my machine all my icons except for the regular ones (folder, recycle, network, etc.) change to a generic icon.  I have tried to change them back to their assigned icon using the 'change icon' in folder properties, but it doesn't work.  The only way I could change the icons back was to install a recent disk image.  Any ideas or thoughts?

Desktop restore knows nothing about the actual icon associated with each program except for the icon filename and its position.  In other words, it doesn't change or store the actual icon: only information about it.

Hi and thanks for responding.  What if the info that Desktop Restore stores gets mixed up, jumbled, or pointed to something else?  Could that cause my problem?  Just as an experiment I removed DR during the last couple of days and carried on my usual practices.  So far no problems with my icons.  I am planning on reinstalling DR in the next day or so and I am going to see what happens.  If DR is the cause it could be that there is an association with another program or something that could cause this problem.  OSes are funny creatures and i have seen some real strange things that couldn't possibly happen, but does.

Well it only stores the absolute pathname of the program or icon so that it can later refer to that same unique icon on the desktop (when moving them around).

I understand.  I am going to test my theory as much as Ican.  I will keep you in the loop if you want.  Can you keep this post active for a while longer?
