I have just installed a new Edirol UM880 on Windows VP.
It seems to work OK with Sonar 3 and Cubase 5.

However, when I run MIDI-OX it comes up with a message:
"DevCapsOut:Unknown Device: A device ID has been used that is out of range for your system."

I have re-installed the Edirol drivers and also MIDI-OX.
The Edirol drivers are the latest.

Prior to installing the the Edirol UM880, I de-installed a Yamaha USB/Midi interface.

Any help would be much appreciated.

You may need to edit the registry to get rid of mention of the older Yamaha Drivers. Try checking this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32

In there will be various MidiN values (N = 1,2,3...). Delete any values relating to the Yamaha drivers (I recall they're similar to 'ysubxxx'). The Roland driver name is: rddv1015.dll or similar. Then reboot.

Hi Jamie,
I checked the registry and can't find any entries for the Yamaha.
My midi entries look like:
midi Reg_SZ wdmaud.drv
midi1 Reg_SZ xgusb.cpi
midi2 Reg_SZ wdmaud.drv
midi3 Reg_SZ RDDV1015.dll
midimapper Reg_SZ midimap.dll

Interestingly two of the entries look to be the same.
Is midi1 something to do with the Yamaha?

Yes, delete the midi1 Reg_SZ xgusb.cpi line. You can also delete the midi2 Reg_SZ wdmaud.drv line as this can eventually be the source of a Windows bug (See the FAQ for more details), but it's not required. WDMAud.drv is a Microsoft driver that can fill up unused positions and eventually prevent driver installations.

Hi Jamie,
Since my last posting Edirol pointed me to this URL.

I deleted the Yamaha driver entry in the Device Manager and the problem went away. It claims that there is a 10USB limit with 2000and XP.
I will also make the changes that you recommend and that should clean things up for me.
It's so easy to install things on your PC, but they never seem to de-install and leave your system tidy!
Anyway, my Edirol is working fine now and MIDI-OX is up and running again.
Thanks ever so much for your help Jamie. Without people lke yourself, many of us would be completely in the dark.

BTW, I would like to register my version of MIDI-OX as a non-commercial user. How can I do this?

That's an excellent link -- Thanks! That may help some other people too.

As you know, it's not required to purchase MIDI-OX in order to use it, but some folks have wished to register it anyway. By definition, that makes them commercial users. A license can be purchased on-line through the MIDI-OX store (http://www.midiox.com/moxcom.htm).

If you end up doing this, you'll need to re-install MIDI-OX to get the Personal/Commercial choice so that you can enter your license number.

I have a different issue, and while it's not strictly a Midi-Ox problem, I want to run it by you (you're the only other people I can find with a UM-880).

So everything works just great, as long as I don't setup any patches. I can send output to the midi ports, and I can get input from the unit, it's all good.

Then, if I setup a patch of any kind. it seems that the PC can no longer send MIDI to the UM880. Even if I'm not on that patch. Even after I delete that patch! Sometimes if I do a factory reset, it fixes the problem, or if I get superstitious, I factory reset and reboot the computer.

Same behavior with different hosts. Very frustrating. Can you have both patches and host control on the same ports?

Sorry: I have never used the UM880 Patch facility, as I use the computer to control routing.
