Title: Using Midi-Ox as a Master Midi Controller?
Post by Wolfgan on Aug 7th, 2006, 3:01pm
Hi fellows,
During the past months I was trying to decide on a better setup to use while playing live. One interesting approach I'm interested to try is Jordan Rudess' strategy (one single keyboard, a master midi controller, several midi rack synths).

Basically JR programs every track so his hands never abandon the single keyboard, and with a foot pedal he changes the "keyboard setup" (meaning defining several zones in the keyboard and assigning multilayer voices/patches/effects to each zone).

I want to try the JR approach on the cheap with my Yamaha kbd, a portable PC and lots of programming ... do you thing Midi-Ox will allow me to do that?

This is what I imagine in advance as an example of live usage:

1- Send program changes + parameters to the kbd (ie chn1=Piano, vol 127, pan 64, attack 127, chorus type 3 vols 100, chn2= Saw Lead, etc etc)

2- Map C3 to B5 as zone Z1, and assign it to play in chn1 and chn3, Map C5 to B7 as Zone Z2 and make it respond to chn4, 5 and chn6

3- On key B3 play trigger a midi sequence when pressed

4- After playing ie key A1, send another setup to the kbd (compressed of another set of instructions like points 1 2 & 3 above)

I'm just an amateur player with computer skills enjoying the learning process :-), I read the Midi-Ox documentation and several interesting posts in this forum, but I'm still unsure I'm on the rigth track, it's too complex to program or I'm just reinventing the wheel (Googled for midi sequencers for live performances but it seems no product is oriented the way I want).

Thanks in advance for any help or thoughts, Wolf.

Depending on exactly what you want to do, you can do this without resorting to scripting.  You can use MIDI Program Changes to change the MIDI OX mapping and sending the appropriate messages to your (actual or virtual) sound sources.

Thanks Peter. I was able to do a lot of things reviewing the Patch Mapping docs after your hint, and also the sample maps.

One question thou... how can I send the initial setup to the keyboard? It's not a single command, but multiple ones (multiple channels, program changes, pan, vol, expression, attack and sustain time, etc etc).

I was thinking about sending a midi file with all those midi commands. Is it possble to trigger the sending from inside midi-ox?

Thx, Wolf.

Inside a data mapping, you can have multiple lines matching the same input message but sending different output messages (with some delay).

I can't remember if you need to have "Pass original value on (Clone)" checked to make this work or not.
