Title: Is possible...midi tempo messages trough pedal
Post by marce on Jan 11th, 2004, 12:00pm
I was thinking to send to a slave midi recorder the tempo im playing (human tempo) trough the pedal events - a pedal a beat or a 4/4 measure- . I dont know much about midi timing, you think is possible with midiox? any tip?
thanks

I'm afraid that is a fairly complicated proposition, as MIDI tempos are set by the frequency of the Clock messages being sent as MIDI Sync.  It might be possible (after a certain amount of work) as long as MIDI-OX was the Master MIDI Sync device.   Currently, when MIDI-OX is the Master device, you can change tempo by the spin-buttons in the MIDI Sync window.

Taking a slightly different angle on this...

Muzys has automation on its tempo crontroller.  So you can use (abuse :-) ) any MIDI CC number to control tempo.  You don't need MIDI OX for this, unless the pedal in question is transmitting a fixed MIDI CC number that clashes with some other function.  In this case, just use a map to change the controller number.

That sounds cool, but what is Muzys?

Great, thanks.  I wonder if they also have to answer everybody's personal question about how to hook up their gear?  :P

Hi friends. After searching  a little in the web the only software a find to record freely (without worry about the time) and then get a readable score (recording a second track giving the tempo with a note) is one called "motu freestyle".
About this topic you can read in another forum

Peter, i know that computer music have a free version of "muzys" but i cant make it work yet. If you can, say me please. The link:

marce - okay, I see what you're trying to do and what you mean by "pedal" now.

Given that, you might want to look at KeyKit.  That's clever enough you might be able to time the pedal intervals, determine the tempo and use that to rescale the captured MIDI phrase for subsequent editing.

You probably want to have some tolerance in the detection of and change to tempo so that poor pedal control doesn't distort things too much.  As you're not going to get this happening "real time", you can throw as much processing at the problem as you like! :-)

KeyKit is here: http://nosuch.com/keykit/

Not really - MIDI OX does some static translation of MIDI messages.  Your problem requires computed interpolation that MIDI OX doesn't do.  You could maybe write some scripting for MIDI OX but I've no experience in that area.  KeyKit is probably the better solution, as your problem is more within its domain.
