Title: Windows Volume Control and MIDI
Post by duffrecords on Mar 17th, 2004, 3:37am
Has anyone tried controlling the overall Windows volume control with MIDI messages?  I bought a Roland SI-24, which is essentially a MIDI controller with built-in mic preamps and it communicates with a computer via an RPC-1 sound card (a.k.a. R-BUS).  While this setup works fine for my mixing needs (with Nuendo, ProTools, etc.) I've found it has some limitations when it comes to ordinary audio applications in Windows.  Because of the nature of this unit, the master faders only transmit MIDI data; it's not a stand-alone audio mixer.  So when I feel like popping in a CD to listen to, I can only control the level on the software side with my mouse and by default the audio comes out full-blast.  Besides, my whole reason for buying the SI-24 was to do away with the mouse and keyboard while mixing  ;D.  So I was just wondering if anyone knew of a way to send Windows a MIDI message that could control its audio output level.  I understand it's quite possible that there is no way to do this; it's not like Linux where you can get into the guts of the OS and rearrange it.

I dont know if there is a software to  control Windows overall sound, but i know mixing software that is controlled via MIDI.
An example of it, is "nTrack Studio" a mixing software that is fully controlable by midi messages (play, rewind, volume, aux returns, etc) the link http://ntrack.com
To control windows i use a keyboard utility called "sound control plus", but i know there are also remote controls (like the TV ones) to do this.
Maybe a good idea to add to MIDIOX: control windows events trough midi messages  ;)

I've not really looked in detail but Bome has a range of MIDI translators that might be of use.
