Title: Midi Note to Relative
Post by nihad on Dec 26th, 2006, 10:13am
My goal is to use two notes on my MIDI keyboard to momentarly alter tempo in Ableton Live, in other words mimic a turntable push/pull. I believe it's very simple, but I'm a total newbie on MIDI-OX, allthough I have an idea on how it could work ..

Note 31 On --> Relative control, subtract a value of 10
Note 31 Off --> Relative control, add a value of 10

Note 33 On --> Relative control, add a value of 10
Note 33 Off --> Relative control, subtract a value of 10

How should I map this?

You're asking MIDI OX to remember something that Live knows.

That's not going to be possible without scripting (I don't do scripting) either MIDI OX or Live.

hmm .. youre missing the point with relative data ..

i just want to send inc/dec messages, no parameter feedback is necessary .. allthough i must do it in a way live recognises it. and possibly the easiest way is to send relative data (like i.e. doepfer pocket dial can do) on note on/off ..

Unfortunately, you're missing the point with the Pocket Dial (http://www.doepfer.de/pd.htm) - it needs feedback:

Quote:
This enables a jump-less change of parameters - provided that the device or software controlled by POCKET DIAL features data feedback of the new starting data after a preset change as POCKET DIAL needs the starting values of theparameters of the new preset

You can't just make stuff up with MIDI.  If you want to send an event to Live and get Live to interpret it as meaning "adjust the tempo", that's fine.  There isn't a MIDI message that means that.

Check out the docs:
http://www.harmony-central.com/MIDI/Doc/doc.html
http://www.harmony-central.com/MIDI/Doc/table3.html

You'll see in Table3, 0x60 and 0x61 labelled "Data Entry +1" and "Data Entry -1".  The way these work is you select a parameter, using 0x62/0x63 or 0x64/0x65 and then increment or decrement it.

Most of the other controls are switches (on/off) or variable amounts, neither of which is what you're after.

This has been a long requested feature for MIDI-OX mapping.  I hope to be able to get to it this coming year.

Jamie -

I hope that when you do implement this important feature, you can somehow also add it as an ASCII keyboard feature.

Don't quite know how it could work, but it would be great if an ASCII key could increment or decrement a given CC.
