Title: Re: How to use 2 computer with 1 midi conntroller Post by Peter L Jones on May 30th, 2011, 8:39am The physical cabling should look like this: <MIDI controller>[MIDI Out] -> [MIDI In]<computer #1> <computer #1>[MIDI Out] -> [MIDI In]<computer #2> <..> is a MIDI device [..] is a physical MIDI port -> is a cable MIDI Events from <MIDI controller> will then get to <computer #1>. However, that's where they'll stop, unless you do something to forward them on. On <computer #1>, you can run MIDI-OX like this: {MIDI In}=>(MIDI-OX)=>{MIDI Out} {..} is an Windows MME MIDI port. (..) is a program running on a computer. => means the port is open by the program. MIDI-OX will send MIDI Events it read from the {MIDI In} port to the {MIDI Out} port it's connected to (and they'll be connected by default). However, most Windows MME MIDI drivers only allow one program to open a MIDI port, so this would stop you running any other software on <computer #1>. The way around this is to use MIDI Yoke as well as MIDI-OX. MIDI Yoke is a Windows MME MIDI driver that acts like a MIDI Out port connected directly to a MIDI In port. The advantage is that the ports can be shared. So you set up like this: {MIDI In}=>(MIDI-OX)=>{MIDI Yoke Out #1} {MIDI Yoke In #1}=>(MIDI-OX)=>{MIDI Out} Note: that's only one instance of MIDI-OX running. Any program on <computer #1> can now use {MIDI Yoke In #1} instead of {MIDI In} to read MIDI Events from the <MIDI controller>. And a program can write MIDI Events to {MIDI Yoke Out #1} and they'll be sent to <computer #1>. |

Title: Re: How to use 2 computer with 1 midi conntroller Post by Peter L Jones on May 31st, 2011, 3:25am Makes no real difference but I'd say MIDI over Ethernet is just one more thing to go wrong, myself (but I've never used it). |
