That really is a fairly broad question.  The answer really depends on what you want to do with MIDI.  Are you looking to play MIDI files, a musician wanting to use MIDI keyboards, or a programmer wanting to understand the protocol, or something else?

Some good technical overviews are available here (http://www.borg.com/~jglatt/tutr/miditutr.htm).

i want to make techno music, that's only hobby. I'll buy a simple midi keyboard. I'm student so i don't have much money  :-[ i think yamaha psr170ad is useful for me. I have zoltrix nightingale sound card and old sound blaster 16. Should i buy sound blaster live for my hobby? or can i use software synhesizers for elecronic music?

I think SoftSynths are now one of the foremost ways people are creating Electronic music, and this is likely to increase in the future. Project5 (http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/Project5/default.asp)
