Title: Guitar, Firewire Soundcard, MIDI-OX, Cubase, VST
Post by jezzy on Jul 26th, 2004, 6:08am
Can I play an electric guitar into an external firewire soundcard (or Yamaha 01x), MIDI-OX, Lateral Solution's Guitar Synth, Cubase SX and a VST?

Any solutions greatly appreciated,
Jezzy

Your electric guitar outputs audio.

If you feed this to your computer, it's still audio, whatever kind of analog to digital converter you put it through.

MIDI OX processes MIDI.  If you want to control MIDI Synths, you need to send MIDI to your computer.

I've no idea how to do that with an electric guitar.

Thanks fo the post.

Lateral Solution's Guitar Synth converts audio into MIDI but how do I configure MIDI-OX to get it into a Cubase SX VST?

Any ideas?

Jezzy

Ah... strange name for something that turns Audio into MIDI - I'm used to Synths turning MIDI into Audio..!  ::)

I'll assume it's a standalone bit of software.

One of two situations is then the case:
a) It creates a "virtual MIDI In port" that other applications can open and sends MIDI there
b) It opens a MIDI Out port available on your system and sends MIDI there

In the former case, you'd just open the virtual MIDI In port in Cubase, so I guess that's not what's happening! :-)  We'll go with (b).

Okay, you need to plug a MIDI Cable into the MIDI Out port you've opened in the Guitar Synth and run this to a MIDI In port that you can open in Cubase.  Being careful not to try to open the same MIDI Out in Cubase as in the Synth.

Mmm... not keen on the external cable?  Well, you can replace it with MIDI Yoke.  (Each MIDI Yoke "junction" is a MIDI Out port, a virtual MIDI cable and a MIDI In port.  You treat it just like the equivalent hardware setup.)

I don't think you need MIDI OX, unless I'm still missing something.
