Title: Midi for beginners...
Post by zro1zro on Feb 15th, 2002, 1:46pm
I've just bought a Boss VF-1 processor and while searching the net, I found out you can use this program to download patches  to be used. So I immediately downloaded the program, gladly registered it (support your freeware/shareware) but now find that I have absolutely no idea what to do with it. Is there a site out there that offers teaching on what to do based on my needs? I don't really see my self as a midi programmer as I'm really an hobbiest engineer but I still want to know what to do. Thanks for any help you can offer. I'd be willing to help anybody with graphics design help in return.

I'll try to cover the basics -- refer to the help file for details.  From the description, it sounds like you want to make bulk transfers of System Exclusive dumps between MIDI-OX and Boss VF-1.  The first thing to do is get the VF-1 attached to the computer using MIDI Cables (you have a Computer MIDI interface - right?): connect the VF-1 MIDI Out to the Computer MIDI In, and the VF-1 MIDI In to the Computer MIDI Out.

Receiving
Launch MIDI-OX.  Open Options | MIDI Devices... and select your computer MIDI Interface as input and output.  Press OK.  Open View | SysEx... and then SysEx | Receive Manual Dump... (in the SysEx view).  A Message Box "0 Bytes Received" appears - just leave it for now.  Look in the VF1 manual to see how to initiate a dump.  Once the VF1 starts its dump the MIDI-OX message box will start incrementing.  After it stops updating, press OK.  The data will appear in the Display window and can be saved to a .SYX file: Display Window | Save As....

Sending
Open the SysEx view (View | SysEx...), and choose Command Window | Load File...  Navigate to a .SYX file and open it.  To send it, choose Command Window | Send SysEx...

Great! Worked like a charm! Apparently, there are many user "patches" for my signal processor and that was what I needed to d/l them into the box. Thanks for your help and I'll be reading the link you sent.
