I have been trying to install & use MIDI-OX, but ... The program seems to load successfully, but when I click on the icon, I immediately get an error message: "MIDI-OX. Dev Caps Out: A device ID has been used that is out of range for your system." :(

If I then click enter 63 times (yup, 63), the program comes up.

But although I can assign a MIDI input, I cannot assign any MIDI output except my soundcard synth --no MIDI out. Instead I get a similar error message: "MIDI-OX. A device ID has been used that is out of range for your system.

I have a dual-boot system, and I do NOT get the problem when I install the program on my general programs setup. But I get the problem on my music-only setup: Machinery is Wintel w/ XP Pro and Audigy EX; Software is Cubase 5.1, Cubase SX, Reason.

I DID try uninstalling and re-installing.
I vaguely remember reading that Cubase likes to steal all available MIDI channels, but is that true even when it is not running (because the problem occurs before I start anything except MIDI-OX).

Hope someone out there can advise me, because this looks like a really great program!

(Heard about it reading Sound-On-Sound, brit music mag, BTW.)

I have seen that message issued when a driver fails to properly load. On the systems I have seen it, it has been caused by a MIDI USB device being unplugged. It doesn't sound like that in your case (unless you had a MIDI USB device installed at one time, that was never properly uninstalled?).

What happens is that XP is reporting a MIDI device on every possible ID. MIDI-OX only supports a maximum of 64, or else you would have gotten even more error messages.

Are the Audigy drivers properly installed on your music Setup? Did you ever have another MIDI device installed on your music-only setup (or is there a '!' by any device in your System | Hardware | Device Manager)? If so, see if you can remove all vestiges of it.

I'll look into the possibility of providing more information in the error message.

I am getting the same error message.
My setup : Toshiba Notebook, WinXP Home, Midiman USB Midisport 1x1, RME HDSP Digiface (including 2 MIDI ports).

I tried removing all external devices even then built-in MS synth is presented 64 times as an output device.

If I remember correctly this problem has not been there initially - maybe it's related to the installation of some other programs (Wavelab ?).

Any help appreciated.

You might want to check your registry as described in the following article to see if some driver is referenced by the MIDIn entries:

I am a newbie to MIDIOX and searched for an Installer problem comming up with an older post with the same problem I am having. My error message on start up is DevCaps Out: Unknown Device: A Device Id has been used that is out of range for your system. I either have to go into the Task Manager and end task several time to close or click OK 64 times then the program opens. I am using Win XP Pro on a Dell 650 Precision. I have an Audigy 2 Platinum sound card. I tried installing and running MIDIOX on my other Dell Precision 530 with the same Audigy 2 Platinum installed and it loaded and runs fine. Any further Info on the DevCaps Out problem?

One thing you can check is the Driver Log file that gets created each time you launch MIDI-OX. As MIDI-OX queries and Opens drivers, it writes a Log file in the Application folder (C:\Program Files\MIDIOX) named _MOXBOOT.txt. You can look in there to see if there's any information about which driver is malfunctioning in the system.

I have this issue also. It occurs when I have the power disconnected to a particular midi device attached to my computer, in this case a digital preamp connected via usb is powered down. Similar issue I expect to the one outlined by Jamie about disconnected cable. When I power the unit up, midiox opens without any probs.

Uff, USB and MIDI and Windows don't go together all that well it seems... If I plug in my USB controller keyboard when I'm logged in (MIDI OX usually running), Windows doesn't recognise anything happened. I have to log out, plug in, log in. So much for plug-n-play (and yes, it's class compliant). And, of course, as the MIDI port doesn't exist when the keyboard isn't there, I have to remember to reconfigure MIDI OX after plugging in and before unplugging.
