Title: bank changes not working with windows synth
Post by Jordo on Feb 24th, 2005, 6:02pm
Hi.  I'm using MIDI-OX with Windows 2kPro.  The Windows GM synthesizer is ignoring bank select messages from MIDI-OX.  I've verified with MS DirectMusic Producer that the other banks indeed exist within the windows synth (gm.dls) and that I'm sending the right bank select codes.

Any ideas or help on this?  I didn't find anything on this searching the web or these forums, and I haven't got on to trying on my win98 machine.

What sequence of MIDI events are you trying to send?  Are you sure you've got the bank numbers right?  (i.e. have you considered whether Bank 1 is in fact CC0=0 rather than CC0=1?)

I installed the Yamaha XG soft synth (S-YXG50, came with my sound card), and it does respond to the bank change messages.  So I'm satisfied.  Maybe the MS synth needs some special directx treatment before it will change banks; I have no idea; I tried many combinations of possible bank change messages with it; maybe this MS synth ignores bank change messages altogether.

MIDI-OX is great.  I use it to connect MIDI from my ESQ-1 keyboard to software wavetable synthesizers.

Doh!  Yes, the answer was in the question: GM only has bank 0 (and drums are locked to channel 10).
