Title: Mixer Yamaha 01v (not 01v96) please help
Post by Vomos on Oct 11th, 2020, 8:30pm
Sorry in advance for my english (i'm russian and have very bad english. I use Google.translate)

I have a Yamaha 01v mixer that I really want to use as a control surface for the Pro Tools program. For a long time I could not understand why Pro Tools does not want to work with this mixer. Now I understand this and I want to try to use MIDI-OX for my task. But now I am faced with the fact that I do not understand anything in the program itself. The question is, does anyone have a preset for MIDI-OX with this mixer or a more or less brief instruction that will describe how to correctly assign incoming and outgoing midi signals?

Oh yeah, I almost forgot: I'm a student, using Windows 10 64 and Pro Tools 12

Hello,

Just started to use MIDI OX a few days ago, but i will try to help.

...so connect your mixer with your Computer, start MIDI OX, click on OPTIONS, then click MIDI Devices, a window opens and here you can choose your mixer for input to computer and output from computer to mixer. I suggest to click on MIDI mapper as output too, i think u need that later but iīm not sure about that.

Then press OK when finished. Next click on VIEW then on Input Monitor.

Now you should see two windows and when you send MIDI data from your mixer something should be seen in the input and in output window.

From here it is hard to tell, because i donīt know what exactly you are trying to do/what is not working...

So if you are reciving MIDI data now, explain exactly what is not working and what are you trying to do and i think it will be possible to help. (Nice piece of hardware, by the way.)

Have a nice Day.

Thanks for the answer!

me Earlier I tried to do everything that you said, but in the output I indicated the return response to MIDI output. The result of my actions was an inadequate response of the faders (they resisted my attempts to move them, and the program produced tons of incomprehensible information with great speed)

Now i did everything that you told and he showed this
(I moved the faders from first to ninth a little)

Ok so as i said im a beginner with this too. But i try to help some more.

Click Options then Data Display, then click both, input and output no HEX. Itīs better to read then.

So now when you move a control on your mixer you can see what kind of message it is sending. So in Input monitor on EVENTS you can see it is sending CONTROL CHANGE or CC. On DATA 1 you see a number. This the number connected to the CC. Just try, moving different faders they should sent diffrent numbers. On DATA 2 there is a second number, i think this should be 0 when fader is all down and 127 when fader is all up.

Then click OPTIONS and Data Mapping, a window opens and here you can "translate" it to somethig which pro tools can understand. Problem is i donīt know what pro tools can understand.

If you can find out what kind of message pro tools needs, i can try to explain how mapping works.

For example, if mixer is sending CC 41 and pro tools is reciving on CC 42 this can be solved with mapping.
But you need to find out what pro tools can understand.

And of course pro tools has to be in the same midi channel as the mixer.

And please try, if you can change in the mixer menu which CC Number a fader is sending.

The funny thing is that I myself began to move in this direction. For the past two hours I've been looking for Control Change information in Pro Tools ...

Moreover, I figured out how to set up CC in the mixer.

Now I probably just need to understand how CC is arranged in Pro Tools itself

Here's what happens. I can understand it more or less

UPD: Just choosing at random, I found out that in Pro Tools, the first fader is on channel "0". But again, as before, only the computer can control the fader on the mixer, not vice versa.

I also forgot to mention that before I could control the faders on the mixer from Pro Tools, but Pro Tools itself did not respond to fader movements.

iīm using LMMS as a DAW (itīs a free programm) and a midi keyboard, doing the same thing you are trying to with your mixer and Pro Tools as a DAW.
I just asign a CC to the fader, then in LMMS right klick on the controller i want to control, then you can choose something like: connect to controller. A window opens then, and when i move the fader on the keyboard it is automaticly recognized by LMMS.

But you should not use some of the CC, because some have standart control connected to it. For example CC 1 is allways used for Mod Wheel. Open control panel in Midi ox, there is a list, and you can see which are unused.

It looks like you can do this whitout midi ox. Maybee ask on some kind of pro tools forum, if you still canīt figure it out.

Or sell me the mixer, i take it for a good price... :P

The problem is that I am studying to be a sound engineer and I need to control using a mixer specifically in Pro Tools, since my teachers require work in this program

I'm afraid LMMS will not be able to help me, especially since, as I understand it, this program is not very suitable for mixing and editing audio tracks of films

I was not trying to say that you should switch to LMMS. Just for example how it is done there.

As i wrote before: Maybee ask on some kind of pro tools forum, if you still canīt figure it out.

Good Luck
