Has anyone else have this issue? Restore desktop icons mostly works but some icons are in wrong place? Left is when I ran Save, right is when I ran Restore

Interesting observation. Thank you. Yes, if I ran it twice or 3 times, each time more icons move into the right place, but no further improvement are observed after 3 times. In my case, two icons stubbornly refuse to move.

I have no way of verifying Win 2008 server compatibility, but do make sure you have downloaded the most recent version of the applet, and do select the suggested settings. If it still seems wrong, try manually adjusting the icons where you want and then re-save. Re-save after installing any new program or adding a shortcut. It also looks like you're running it in a VM? is that true? I have no way of testing that case either.

I am using Desktop Restore in a Remote Desktop (RDP) system. The OS is Windows 2008 SP2 64-bit Datacenter. The tool is most useful for RDP because RDP always loses my icon positions. No VM involved here. But this problem also shows up on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit PC. I am using the Command Line version since I can call it from a batch file. Very useful for RDP since you can tell it to run a batch file on connection. The Restore Desktop CommandLine is the latest version on the website. Thank you for your comments.

The problem arises for me systematically when files on my desktop have the same name but different extensions.

As an alternative solution, I have switched to Iconoid which does not have this problem. http://www.sillysot.com/

First o all, Jamie, thanks a lot for this and other free programs. You must be very busy with your work at Cakewalk, but take time to create free programs as well. Thank you. I really liked using Desktop Save and Restore with Windows XP. It worked well, and I liked how it integrated into the shell--no need for start menu, just a right click on the desktop to save or restore. Great! However, I do not think Desktop Save and Restore works with Windows 7. Have you tried it? It appears to work, at first glance. It installs fine, the right-click on the desktop works, the app opens fine. Save seems to work fine. However, when one's icons get scrambled up (I sure wish Microsoft would fix that bug, which has not improred over several versions), and one clicks restore, nothing is restored. I haven't yet tried doing it multiple times, as some have, but I don't find anything restored on one pass, just as scrambled as before. I also tried using the Custom Save and Restore, saved and restored to and from a file, still did not work. I was hoping that the newest version would solve the problem. I updated to that, and have the same problem. Restore does not work right, in Windows 7. Any solutions for that?

I'm using Desktop restore V1.6.3.031 (32bit) on Windows 7 Pro SP1 and I'm afraid to report that it doesn't work correctly. When I do a restore most of the icons don't actually move. Using a 1680x1050 layout and the bottom 2 options ticked only. I see others have this problem too. Any sign of it being fixed? Pretty please?

Is it possible you folks have Auto Arrange checked? If so, Windows will always fight with Desktop Restore no matter what you do... Turn that off!

I am also seeing the same problem i.e. need to restore multiple times with some icons inching their way closer and closer to their intended location each time. I'm using the command line version. The issue has been present for a long time for me, ever since I started using Desktop Restore, Windows,7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10.

I know this is years later, but I believe all the issues raised here are fixed with the latest version: 1.7.2.078. The command line program is now synced up with the shell extension and is included in the main installer: http://www.midiox.com/zip/DesktopRestoreInstall.exe
