MIDI Yoke does not appear after installation
« on: Oct 26th, 2001, 2:27am » |

Installing under W2K seems pretty straight-forward and as far as I can tell went just like the instructions (except the settings box did not come up). I rebooted, but when I look for the device in SONAR, MIDI Ox or AutoTune 3, it does not appear in the drop-down list. I went into Control Panel and can see it there with the rest of the audio hardware, but it is not shown on the list of MIDI devices under the Audio tab. Under MIDI Yoke NT Driver properties (General): No drivers are installed for this device. This is my first installation of the product so I did not have to un-install the previous version. Is it necessary to start with that version and then upgrade to this one? Do you have any suggestions as to what I can try? TIA, Steven Bell Top of the Hill Music

It is not a good sign that the settings box did not appear. That would indicate installation failure. Make sure you are installing with Administrator priveleges, and try re-installation. Do you have other MIDI devices installed on the machine?

Yes, I'm logged on as Administrator, so it's not that. I've tried it a few times. No error messages. I have a SB 16 PCI I use for MIDI. I also have two delta 1010's that have MIDI devices. All of these appear. I'm going to try disabling the MIDI on the 1010's and see if that helps. Thank you for your help. I've heard this is a great tool. Steven

The only other thing I can think of is to make sure that you are not blocking unsigned drivers. In Control Panel | System | Hardware | [Driver Signing...], make sure that File System Verification is set to Warn or Ignore, and not Block

M-Audio doesn't have signed drivers either, so I'm used to the warning. Just to make sure, I did check and it is set for "warn". I don't think this has anything to do with the limited number of ports supported by WDM, right? Steven

I don't think that WDM would have any effect on this, but anything is possible . The only time the config dialog failed for me was when I didn't choose "Sound, video and game controllers" in the Add New Hardware applet, but you say that you've followed the pictures exactly, so that wouldn't be a factor. Have you installed Service Pack 2 for Win 2000?

Thanks for the ideas, but I'm pretty sure I added it under Sound, video and game controllers. In fact, that is where I was able to see it listed. I just couldn't get the Properties to work. Steven

Another thing to check is that MYokeNT.dll exists in the WinNT\System32 directory, has size 29,696 bytes, and shows version 1.70.0.017. You could try removeing it before re-installation.

When looking at the device in the device manager I see it there but upon clicking on the driver properties it says driver is enabled but not functioning properly. Were you presented with the configuration dialog when you installed MIDI Yoke?

Well this is a tough one because I have never been able to reproduce the installation failing. I will assume that for people it has failed on that, they have gone through the pictorial example steps frame by frame and the only frame that is different is #16: Is that correct? Public Request If anyone has had a similar installation problem, and has found a way around it, please relate your experiences here.

anything new to this topic? I don't seem to get the Configure Dialog either... allthough I followed the instructions exactly. It seems that on my win2k system the DRV_CONFIGURE message is not send to myokent.dll while installing the driver. Strange thing is, that when I use the following test hack, everything works fine (I can see the Dialog!) HDRVR handle= OpenDriver( L"myokent.dll", NULL, 0 ); if( handle ) { if( SendDriverMessage( handle, DRV_INSTALL, 0, 0 ) != 0 ) { CloseDriver( handle, 0, 0 ); } // Make sure driver has a configuration dialog box. if( SendDriverMessage( handle, DRV_QUERYCONFIGURE, 0, 0 ) != 0 ) { DRVCONFIGINFO dci; // Set the DRVCONFIGINFO structure and send the message dci.dwDCISize = sizeof (dci); dci.lpszDCISectionName = (LPWSTR)0; dci.lpszDCIAliasName = (LPWSTR)0; SendDriverMessage( handle, DRV_CONFIGURE, 0, (LONG)&dci ); } } CloseDriver( handle, 0, 0 ); There's something strange with the Driver installation process on my system, I guess

i have the same problem on a very fresh installed, very good running xp pro. installed the newest version, settings box didn't show, driver is after rebooting "enabled but not functioning properly". i uninstalled and installed older version, same problem. no idea how to get it working. my only other midi device is a roland um-1 usb. is there any other midi loopback driver running under xp? my only workaround idea is the hardware sollution: to buy another roland um-1 (ca. 40$) and connect the input and output of it. just one connection instead of 8, but enough for me right now. okay, a 10$ soundboard would do it as well, but i'm running on a laptop.

i just found out about the "sonic foundry virtual MIDI router" beeing a possible alternative solution. tried it. same problem. during installation the settings-box that should appear as described in installation manual doesn't show, after rebooting it's installed but "status: driver is enabled but not functioning properly" in the "properties"-box. in this box is as well the same phenomenon like with the midiyoke: there are two radio-button under each other, but no text right of them and under it a "Settings..."-button that makes exactly nothing when clicked. another alternative i've found about is NTONYX MIDI matrix:http://www.ntonyx.com/matrix.html, which is commercial, 14$. i didn't try yet, i'm afraid to spend 14$ for just reading "status: driver is enabled but not functioning properly". does anybody know if it fixes the problem?

| I think you found the other options. I would like to fix this problem, but we still don't know what causes it? For the record, are you using ACPI mode or Standard PC?

| i think ACPI mode (i can use the hibernating standby mode), but i don't remember an option to choose from these both during installation, perhaps ACPI is standart on compatible laptops. can i change it easily without reinstalling and might midiyoke work then?

I'd recommend you keep using whatever mode is working. I asked about this because one fellow, who couldn't install MIDI Yoke (or the Sonic Foundry driver) thought it might be because he was using Standard PC Mode -- it installed correctly on his other machine which was using ACPI. I wanted to make sure that ACPI vs. Standard PC is not a factor, and now I'm fairly certain that it is not. The person that happened to was able to eventually get MIDI Yoke installed by repeated installation attempts -- it worked on the 3rd or 4th attempt for him: see the win2k installation fails thread.

Warning!! NTONYX MIDI Matrix doesn't work as well!

i just purchased NTONYX MIDI Matrix for 14$ and the problem is exactly the same like with "midi yoke NT" and "sonic foundry vmr (virtual midi router)"! i'm waiting for an answer of their support, if they have an idea it might solve the problem of the other two as well. keep you updated...
