win2k installation fails
« on: Apr 2nd, 2002, 9:12pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

i am trying to install midiyoke on win2k.
at the end of the installation i get the error:
the system cannot find the file specified.
installation copied a file
oem15.inf to \winnt\system32
and a file
info.inf to \winnt\inf\mediainf
the indo.inf contains a reference to a file
driver\midi\myokent.dll
but such a directory does not exist anywhere.
what can i do?

At which step of the pictorial configuration does it fail? Are you able to navigate back to your install directory to find the file in Step 14?

Here's the pictorial: Win2K Install

the screen in step 16 tells me the a file could not be found
and therefore installation failed

When you get that screen, you have to navigate back to the C:\MYINST folder, so that it can find the myokent.dl_ file.

Unfortunately, there are some machines that MIDI Yoke NT refuses to install on.  Even more unfortunate, is the fact that some of these machines will not install the Sonic Foundry NT virtual driver either.  As a matter of record, are you using "Standard PC" mode in Win 2000 (versus "ACPI" mode)?

I'll let you know if I find out anything regarding this problem.

this is a toshiba satellite pro 4600 notebook. i am not sure, but i think i installed acpi mode.
can you give me manual installation instructions?
is thjere more than putting the file somewhere, creating the inf file,
and creating an entry in the registry?
i know how to work with the registry, i am a part time software developer myself.

and i REALLY REALLY need midiox to run.
i am doing presentations about musical tuning systems, and i
am using the filter facilities of midix to change
midi signals on the fly.

I have attempted in the past to put together a manual installation guide, but I was thwarted by the myriad undocumented Registry keys that result from a Windows MME driver installation.  Bear in mind that these keys are not specifically named or written to from the driver or the .INF file, but are determined and created by Windows XP itself.

It is highky risky, but the only way you might accomplish a manual install might be to successfully install MIDI Yoke on one XP machine, and then search for registry keys that reference it, and then transfer that information to your notebook.  Be warned though: not all keys will be the same on two different machines.  Keys that reference MIDI1, MIDI2, MIDI3 etc. will refer to different drivers.  Undocumented keys will be written under GUID keys in the CurrentControlSet: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class

In short, it is a risky, error prone process, but it might work.

The other thing you would need to do is to expand and uncompress the driver myokent.dl_ -> myokent.dll and place it in \WinNT\System32 folder.

suddenly, midiyoke installed without problems.
a possible reason (i cannot check any more)
at first i also had my roland sc8820 connected via usb.

now i have one more problem.
i want use midiyoke nt 1 as my default out port for midi mapper. i can set it in contol panel->sounds and multimedia ->
audio midi music playback, but it does not seem to work.
i use midiox to connect midiyoke 1 to my synth,
and this does NOT work, midiox does not get any midi events
from midiyoke port 1 when i play a midi filoe with
mediaplayer or winamp.

what i need is
a midi player which plays midi files in browsers
and send the output to a midiyoke port.
it worked in win98, but now when i set
the midiplayer out port to midiyoke, all the midi
events seem to disappear.

I'm glad to hear that it installed.  Maybe all that registry editing talk scared it  Shocked  Be sure to reboot XP after installing it.

You should be able to use MIDI Yoke NT: 1 as the default device in the Sounds and Multimedia control panel.  After setting it, open MIDI-OX and attach the input to MIDI Yoke NT: 1 as well.  Try playing back a MIDI file in MediaPlayer -- the output should show up in MIDI-OX.

Another test would be to use MidiBar.  Choose MIDI Yoke NT: 1 as output in MidiBar and MIDI Yoke NT:1 as input in MIDI-OX.

If you're not getting anything look in: Control panel | Sounds and Multimedia | Hardware |  MIDI Yoke NT Driver | [Properties] | Properties | MIDI Yoke NT Driver | [Properties] | General and verify that it says the driver is "enabled and working properly"  Press the [Settings] button and see if the config dialog comes up.

this is getting very strange.
i have 2 soft synths on this machine
the microsoft gs that comes with win2k
and the yamaha xg-ac that comes with the toshiba.
when i use midiox to connect midiyoke 1 to
yamaha, nothing goes out of midi ox
(i look int the midi port activity monitor)
when i use the microsoft synth,
and set midi out to midiyoke port 1 in the control panel,
using midibar as midi player works,
but not winamp and not mediaplayer 7.1 and not winamp 2.78
i do not understand this at all.

I'm afraid I do not have a good sense of your hookup.  If you are using MIDI Mapper it should be something like:

MediaPlayer->[MIDI Mapper]->MYNT:1->[MIDI-OX]->Yamaha

i am close to a solution now. i installed midibar as my
default midi player, and then things almost work.
the one remaining problem is that midibar
does not automatically start to play a file.
when i doubleclick a midi file, it is opened in midibar.
but then i have to pres the play button
to start playing.
can i have midibar start playing automatically?
then i have all i need, and i do not even need
mediaplayer.

Yes.  It takes a little configuration.  Open MIDI-OX and choose Options | File Associations... and make sure that [x] MIDI File (.mid) -- Associated with MidiBar is checked.  Now open Windows Explorer and choose Tools | Folder Options... choose File Types tab.  Select MID.  It should say MIDI-OX MIDI next to it.  Press [Advanced]. Select Play, and then press Set Default.  Press OK.

Now when you double-click or otherwise launch a MIDI it will play instead of just open.  Wink

I am afraid I don't have Netscape and I am not sure how it launches players.  Do they have 'mime' associations?

On my System Midiyoke refuses to install with the aforesaid error message (cannot find the file..). Removing other MIDI devices did not make it work.

Any new ideas ?

Thanks !
