DevCaps Out

I get two errors, the second of two won't let me run the program. The first one I get is: "Windows reports: 66 MIDI output devices. Only the first 63 output devices will be supported by MIDI-OX" Then I click OK and get this error: "DevCaps Out: Unknown Device: A device ID has been used that is out of range for your system." Then I click OK, but it comes up again and again, until I go to task Manager and "end program." I am using a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop, with a 2.0ghz P4 in it running Windows XPpro. The Midi device is a Midiman 1x1. I am trying to use MIDI-OX with Line 6 Tone Transfer for POD XT. What do I do

I can get it to run after clicking OK about 50 times. But it only recognizes the input of my Midiman 1x1, not the output. Any thoughts? I was able to recieve a sysex dump, but can't send it back because it can't find the output and my 1x1 doesn't show up on the output list.

We've seen the erroneous device number message only when there is a problem with a MIDI USB driver in the System. This can occur when certain USB drivers are installed, but there is no hardware to back it up (the interface has been removed). It sounds like you have some MIDI driver conflict in your system: the lack of an output driver reinforces this. Check MIDIMan for updated drivers and/or assistance.

Jamie, This is the same behaviour I reported in my midioutGetNumDevs (6.5.1.346) post. This time on a Dell Inspiron 8200 (instead of a 8100) although he's got a different midi interface. I have also noticed the same effect (Windows reporting a silly number of Midi Devices) on other machines with a freshly installed Steinberg USB midi adapter. It would still be possible to support these pesky third party drivers by iterating over the possible 'valid' device ids and simply (silently) rejecting the ones that return a bad_device error. Matt

Unfortunately, though, it would be a large rewrite to disobey and distrust the documented (since Windows 3.1) API, midioutGetNumDevs(). It seems to me that there has to be something fundamentally wrong with a system that erroneously reports a huge number of devices, and by trying to write around this type of problem, it will only delay the enevitable, eventual, failure of it. Still, I'll look into possible solutions. Possibly something like a MIDI-OX safe mode switch. We've already tried a first step at making this somewhat more amenable and fault tolerant: what results are you getting with the Beta I just uploaded: Beta

Jamie, I've now tried your even more recent beta, which if course is fab. That is, after I've acknowledged the error message 63 times, but at least it then supports the devices Matt McKenzie

Maybe we could do something like combining all failures into a single Message.

That would be awsome. I might go crazy clicking the ok button, and i had to find this forum to discover the program would eventually come up if i kept clicking. Thanks dude.
