Connectivity Issue

Hello. I am new to Midi-Ox and I am trying to do something that is probably a relatively simple thing to do. I have a Boss ES-8 guitar switching system that also transmits MIDI program change messages to a couple of my guitar effects pedal. One of the pedals is not reacting properly to the MIDI messages. The manufacturer of the pedal told me I should use the MIDI OX to help determine what messages are being sent to the pedal that may be confusing it. So I downloaded the newest version of the app, purchased a USB to Midi cable to connect to my computer and hooked everything up. But when I went to the app and went to the options menu to see if the app was connecting to the MIDI controller, I didn't see my controller listed.
Can someone let me know what the issue may be and how to get it resolved? Thanks very much.

Sometimes the name of the driver doesn't match the Midi device/interface at all.
With your Midi interface connected to your PC ...
Start MidiOx..
Go to Options / Midi Devices...
There is a list of MIDI Inputs that can come into MidiOx and a list of Midi Outputs, places you can send Midi to.
In the Midi Output list there will be at least the MIDI Mapper and the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth.
Take a note of anything else in the lists (I would write them all down)
Shutdown MidiOx.
Disconnect your interface from the PC
Restart MidiOx - Options / Midi Devices...
I would expect there to be at least one fewer in the Input and Output lists.
These are the names of your interface's drivers.
Plug in your interface and restart MidiOx - goto Options / Midi Devices and select the input and output of your interface. Click OK
Click View / Input Monitor.. to bring up the Input Monitor window.
When you send Midi into your interface it should appear as text in this Input Monitor.
If you need to send the Midi Out again...
Click View / Port Routings.. to bring up the routing window.
To make a connection from the inputs on the left to the outputs on the right click and drag the pix of the Midi socket from the Input to the output you want.

Hi. Thanks for getting back to me. Just so we’re on the same page, the MIDI interface is the cable that is midi on one end and USB on the other, correct? I wasn’t sure if you meant another piece of hardware.

A Midi interface usually has a USB A into the PC, connected to a case of some sort then eith two DIN sockets or two cables with 5pin DIN plugs.
One for Midi in and the other Midi out.
The interface below is well know for either not working, partially working and rarely OK - I've never seen one that works correctly.
I have been given quite a few and none have worked.
There needs to be a micro-controller (a very small computer) inside the case for any Midi interface to work.
Price is no guide as I have seen these in Music shops selling for $30 and on ebay for $6
If this is what you have, you will save tearing out you hair by saving up and getting an interface from Roland, Yamaha, M-Audio (MidiSport), Behringer, MOTU or Akai.
There are some audio interfaces that also have Midi In and Out like Focusrite etc.
Sadly none of them cheap.
There are quite a few new players selling interfaces, but I have no experience with them.

I went and purchased the Roland UM-ONE MIDI interface cable.
I hooked everything up and followed your directions. Everything was going fine until I selected the input and output of the MIDI interface. When I clicked OK, this message came up:
UM-ONE: A device ID has been used that is out of range for your system.
I went ahead to the next step anyway and hit View/Input Monitor, but nothing showed up in the text.
Can you tell me what that message means? I'm guessing it's pretty important.

I have not seen this error before.
I had a look on line and found this

The question has been closed but there are newer comments below the first page that might be helpful.
Further reading on the web shows that Audio as well as Midi interfaces are suffering from this error.
UM-One is a good Midi interface so I'm pretty sure it is Windows problem.
It might take a bit of a search on the web.
I would probably go straight to the MS forum and ask.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I tried again but this time I did not connect the midi out cable to the device I'm trying to control with the midi controller. Once I did that the message went away. The MIDI OX determined that the controller is sending constant Timing clock messages and that is what I think the problem is here. I'll contact Roland and see if there is a way to turn those off.

sorry I'm so late in getting back to you.
I'm sure you know but just to make sure, you are always connecting Midi OUT to Midi IN ? (Midi THRU is an OUT as well)
MidiOx can turn off any and all Midi messages for you.
Goto the menu Options / Midi Filter...
On the new dialog you can see all the Midi message you can filter out - for all channels or just particular ones.
The boxes with '...' on them just have more messages grouped together.
Press 'System Realtime' and in there you can turn off the Midi Clock (it is a global Midi messages so it doesn't have a channel)
Below the selection you can see some check boxes.
You will want 'Filter Out Data as well as display'
On my set up I have all 3 boxes checked.
Press OK and you should be all systems go.
